Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71412
SB1122-71412r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71412 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 4 Reales, 1790-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details. Three-year transitional type with the bust of Charles III, but in the name of Charles IV. This example offers great eye appeal and pleasing detail. Remnants of corrosion on the reverse account for the grade, but the coin is otherwise remarkably intact and spared from the extensive wear that is usually encountered on the type. The obverse displays an attractive portrait of the deceased monarch, the reverse devices are satisfying, and both sides retain bold legends. The surfaces are nicely toned to a mottled pewter gray. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was issued from Santiago 1789-91 and is rare. Four reales struck in the name of Charles IV (KM 38) also exist for 1789.

Recorded mintage: 9,000.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13704, KM-38; Cal-849.
