The first specimen was lot 396 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $13,512.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Reales, 1788-DA. NGC MS-62. Finest Certified Chile 8 Reales of Charles III (1759-88). Lustrous and attractive with virtually no contact marks." The second specimen was lot 1443 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,625 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"CHILI, Charles III (1759-1788), AR 8 reales, 1788DA, Santiago de Chili. Très rare Nettoyé. presque Très Beau. (viceroyalty of Chile, Charles III, 1759-88, silver eight reales of 1788, Santiago mint. Very rare, cleaned, about Very Fine.)"

Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1773-89, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles III are almost as scarce as pillar dollars from that mint.

Recorded mintage: 187,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW. The second specimen is 26,81 g.
