Aureo sale 238, lot 446

This specimen was lot 446 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 420 euro (about US$666 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1788. Potosí. PR. 8 reales. Resello oval con el busto de Jorge III (EBC) para circular como 1 dólar. Rara. MBC+. (eight reales of 1788, Potosí mint, oval counterstamp with the bust of George III for circulation as a dollar. Rare, very fine plus.)"

The year 1773 marked the initiation of bust coinage at Potosi, the last mint to do so, as cobs continued to be produced until 1773. The assayer PR appears for 1776-95. There is an 1788/7 overdate. The counterstamp was applied in 1797 by the Bank of England to circulate its stock of Latin American dollars during a shortage of specie. At that time, the dollar was worth four shillings ninepence.

Recorded mintage of host coin: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
