Aureo sale 238, lot 445

This specimen was lot 445 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 91 euro (about US$144 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1787. Potosí. PR. 8 reales. Rayita. Parte de brillo original. MBC+. (eight reales of 1787, Potosí mint. Obverse scratch, lustrous very fine plus.)"

The year 1773 marked the initiation of bust coinage at Potosi, the last mint to do so, as cobs continued to be produced until 1773. The assayer PR appears for 1776-95.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
