This specimen was lot 31141 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $499.38. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold Escudo 1787 PTS-PR, VF Details (Mount Removed) NGC." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This specimen sold for twice the catalog value even with the obvious mount mark.
