This specimen was lot 40042 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1787/6-JJ Escudo. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). EF-45 (PCGS). Light yellow gold with nice eye appeal and a good deal of remaining luster. An old diagonal scrape is noted in the lower right obverse field. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Mike Dunigan, May 1985." This specimen is one of a type struck at Popayán 1772-89. The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino) concentrated on minting gold, to the near exclusion of silver which predominated at the other colonial mints. While this makes Colombian colonial silver coins expensive, Colombian colonial gold is (comparatively) reasonable and this type is fairly common.
