Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72265

This specimen was lot 72265 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Escudo, 1787-S CM. Seville Mint. Charles III. PCGS EF-45. An evenly worn Escudo with normal circulation marks for the grade and a pale light golden color." Escudos with this bust were struck at Madrid and Seville starting in 1772, production of this denomination having ceased in 1742. This subtype, with the purity lowered to 875 thousandths, was struck 1784-88 and is common.
