This specimen was lot 25590 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1787S-CM, XF45 NGC, considerable mint luster, pleasing yellow-gold surfaces." This type was struck 1786-88 and like all Spanish eight escudos as distinct from Spanish colonial eight escudos, is very rare. It is distinguished by earlier issues of Charles III (1773-84) by being only 0.875 fine instead of 0.901 fine gold.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .762 troy oz AGW.
