Shown is an 1787MoFM eight escudos, one of a type struck 1772-89 during the reign of Charles III. This type, though not cheap, is the first eight escudos type not stratospherically priced. The issues of 1772-85 were 0.901 fine gold. This coin was legal tender in the United States, where it was known as a doubloon, and would have traded for $15.50. This specimen was lot 40260 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,610. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1787-MoFM. NGC AU-50. Weakly struck."
