This specimen was lot 3168 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2300. The catalog description[1] noted, "1786 FM 8 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Bright and lustrous yellow gold, frosty with some faint planchet adjustment marks at rims at base of obverse and reverse, and a faint, diagonal scratch upon the king's cheek. Exceptional for the assigned grade, nearly full lustre. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type struck 1773-88, though not cheap, is the first eight escudos type not stratospherically priced.
