Shown is a 1787MoFM escudo, of a type struck in Mexico 1772-1788. The escudos of Charles III come in three types: KM 116, struck 1760-61, KM 117, struck 1762-71 and KM 118, struck 1772-88. KM 118 is further divided into three subtypes; KM 118.1, with inverted assayers' initials, struck 1772-73 only; KM 118.2, struck 1773-84; and KM 118.2a (this type), struck 1785-88 with fineness reduced to 875 thousandths.
