Spain H3073-31867r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31867 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,620. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1786/74 M-DV AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Madrid mint. A well-struck example with residual underlying luster and a strong lemony-gold color. All the references cited mention a 1786/76 overdate, but the 1786/74 overdate is seemingly unrecorded. Thus this appears to be the first and, so far, only known example." This Spanish equivalent of the doubloon was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1785-88. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Spanish eight escudos are very rare. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1729.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .780 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-282, cf. KM 409.1a (overdate unlisted), Cal-64-66 (same), Cayón-12977-12979 (same).
