This type was struck 1786-88 and like all Spanish four escudos as distinct from Spanish colonial four escudos, is more available than eight escudos of the same period. It is distinguished by earlier issues of Charles III (1773-84) by being only 0.875 fine instead of 0.901 fine gold.
