Spain 1787-S CM 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 33822 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1787 S-CM XF45 NGC, Seville mint. A circulated example that has retained original luster, with a particularly strong strike on the reverse." This type was struck in Madrid 1772-85 (KM 418.1) and Seville 1772-85 (KM 418.2). The Spanish four escudos of Charles III are more available than eight escudos of the same period. It is distinguished from earlier issues of Charles III (1785-88) by being 0.875 fine instead of 0.901 fine gold. Four escudos prior to this type are all rare.
