This specimen was lot 50059 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $499. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Escudo, 1788-P SF. Popaya[n] Mint. NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines. Sharp strike." The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino) concentrated on minting gold, to the near exclusion of silver which predominated at the other colonial mints. While this makes Colombian colonial silver coins expensive, Colombian colonial gold is (comparatively) reasonable and this type is fairly common. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine.
