This specimen was lot 40204 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1787/6-JJ 2 Escudos. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-50 (PCGS). Heavy die clashes at the base of the obverse have caused some swelling and central weakness on both sides. Light yellow gold with some luster and scattered marks. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Stack's, May 1973." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1785-89 and is probably the most common two escudos of colonial Latin America. It represents a slight debasement from the prior type, which was 0.901 fine gold.
