This specimen was lot 40205 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1787-SF 2 Escudos. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-58 (PCGS). With a beautifully defined portrait, bold luster, and nearly full reflectivity on the reverse, this piece has the look of a higher grade. Medium yellow gold with no major issues, just a tiny rim nick at the base of the reverse and a minuscule natural lamination on the epaulet. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Segarra, Madrid, November 1981." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1785-89 and is probably the most common two escudos of colonial Latin America. It represents a slight debasement from the prior type, which was 0.901 fine gold.
