Aureo sale 238, lot 444

This specimen was lot 444 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 85 euro (about US$135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1786. Potosí. PR. 8 reales. Ligeras rayitas en anverso. (MBC/MBC+). (eight reales of 1786, Potosí mint. A few tiny marks on reverse, very fine.)"

The year 1773 marked the initiation of bust coinage at Potosi, the last mint to do so, as cobs continued to be produced until 1773. The assayer PR appears for 1776-95. The SCWC notes a 1786/5 overdate and prices it about 10% higher than the regular date.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12116, Cal. 994, KM 55.
