Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 273

This specimen was lot 273 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1788/2. Carlos III. Madrid. M. 8 reales. Rayitas superficiales. Muy bella. Brillo original. Extraordinario ejemplar. Ex Áureo Selección 2003, nº 196. Ex Colección Isabel de Trastámara 29/10/2014, nº 434. Rarísima así. S/C-. (kingdom of Spain, Charles III, eight reales of 1788, light scratches, very handsome, original luster, extraordinary example, extremely rare, about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck at Madrid and at Seville 1772-88 and it is very scarce from both mints, especially compared to the enormous output from the Latin American mints which used a slightly different design. Most of the issues from the following reign of Charles IV are equally tough but some from the 1802-08 period aren't so rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW, this specimen 27,27 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12128, KM 414.1, Dav-1700, AC. 1069.
