This specimen was of lot 24759 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 2 Escudos 1798-M MF, MS64 NGC. An unbelievably beautiful gold 2 Escudos of Spain. Except for a tiny abrasion on the king's nose, difficult to believe a better one exists." This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1786-88. It is distinguished from earlier two escudos of Charles III by its lower fineness. This date is common. The auction cataloguers seem to have confused it with KM 435.1 of Carlos IV, also issued in 1788. Unlike the Latin American mints, no transitional types exist for 1788-91.
