This specimen was lot 3175 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $3,220. The catalog description[1] noted, "1788 FM 2 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-58 (NGC). Types as above. A high degree of lustre graces frosty medium gold surfaces, considerable reflectivity on both sides. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This is the final year of issue for the type; the king died in January 1788. This specimen shows an upright mintmark and assayer; inverted mintmark and assayer is also known for the date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 6.76 grams, 23.00 mm diameter.
