Aureo sale 232, lot 1258

The specimen shown was lot 1258 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, Spain, March 2011), where it sold for 80 euros (about US$132 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1788. Madrid. M. 2 reales. Limpiada. (EBC-). (Charles III, 1759-88, two reales of 1788, Madrid mint; cleaned, nearly extremely fine.)"

This type was issued at Seville 1773-88 and Madrid 1772-88. Assayers MF and DV are also noted for 1788; assayer MF also issued two reales with the bust of Charles IV, who succeeded his father in January 1788. The minors, especially one and two reales, are much more common than the pesos.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.833 fine silver, .181 troy oz ASW.
