Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 267

This specimen was lot 267 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €240 (about US$317 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1788. Carlos III. Sevilla. C. 1/2 real. Único año de este ensayador. Preciosa pátina. Bella. Ex Áureo & Calicó Selección 2015, nº 188. Ex Colección Manuela Etcheverría. Escasa así. EBC/EBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Charles III, half real of 1788, Seville mint. The only date for this assayer, exquisite patina, handsome, scarce thus, choice extremely fine."

The specimen shown is a Spanish half real struck in 1788 at the Seville mint. The type was struck there and at Madrid 1772-88. These coins were lower in fineness than the colonial issues (Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, etc.) and thus were discounted. There is no reason to think that these coins are rare but they are very difficult to find in the American numismatic marketplace and are likely seriously underpriced.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.812 fine silver, .044 troy oz ASW, this specimen 1,45 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12128, AC. 318, KM 410.2.
