Spain 1780M medio real rev 600.jpg

The specimen shown is a Spanish half real struck in 1780 at the Madrid mint. The type was struck there and at Seville 1772-88. Assayer PJ is recorded for the years 1765-81. These coins were lower in fineness than the colonial issues (Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, etc.) and thus were discounted. There is no reason to think that these coins are rare but they are very difficult to find in the American numismatic marketplace and are likely seriously underpriced.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.812 fine silver, .044 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11170, KM 410.1.
