Spain 1777-M PJ 1/2 real
The specimen shown was lot 191 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 220 euros (about US$363 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1777. Madrid. PJ. 1/2 real. Muy bella. Parte de brillo original. Rara así. EBC+. (Half real of 1777, Madrid mint; very attractive and rare, with some original luster, choice extremely fine.)
This type was issued at Seville and Madrid 1772-88. Assayer PJ is recorded for the years 1765-81. These coins were lower in fineness than the colonial issues (Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, etc.) and thus were discounted. There is no reason to think that these coins are rare but they are very difficult to find in the American numismatic marketplace and are likely seriously underpriced.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.69 g, 0.812 fine silver, .044 troy oz ASW.
