This specimen was lot 1287 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles III, 1789 IJ, posthumous issue, NGC AU details / obv cleaned, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Bold strike with choice luster, parts of rim weak (as made), definitely on the high side of the assigned grade and with the faintest possible hairlines. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." While this type is scarce compared to Mexican or Colombian escudos, it is much more available than any previous type. Assayer IJ is listed for 1788-1802. Charles III died in December 1788 but news travelled slowly to South America, so the new king was not mentioned on the coinage until well into 1789.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12376, Cal-1356; Fr-35; KM-79a.
