This specimen was lot 23060 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $235. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 2 Reales, 1789-IJ. NGC AU-53. transitional issue with the legend 'CAROLUS IV' and the bust of Charles III. Good strike with dark attractive toning. Much nicer than the well worn examples that are normally encountered." This two reales from Peru is a transitional type, bearing the bust of the deceased Charles III but bearing the name of Charles IV. It was issued 1789-91. The assayer IJ appears for 1787-1800. A variety exists (KM 85.2) with the denomination written "R2" instead of the usual "2R".
