from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 2140

This specimen was lot 2140 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Very Rare and Desirable Transitional Bust 4 Escudos, PERU. 4 Escudos, 1789-LIMA IJ. Lima Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-55+. First year of a three-year type. The only certified example of the date on either the NGC or PCGS population reports. This EXTREMELY RARE and gently circulated survivor is quite attractive and seldom encountered. The strike is bold with signs of handling consistent for the grade displaying lovely golden honey patina. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Acquired via private treaty from Mike Dunigan." This scarce type was struck 1789-91 using the bust of the departed Charles III and the name of Charles IV. The purity was lowered from 0.901 to 0.875 in 1786.
