SB1122-72102r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72102 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Escudos, 1792-L. Lima Mint; Assayers Ignacio Zenon de Galvez & Juan Martinez Rojas (I J). Charles IV. PCGS Genuine--Ex Jewelry, EF Details. This rather RARE piece is remarkably well-struck. The coin has lost its original finish and exhibits marks on the rims, evidence of its past as a jewelry piece. However, it remains attractive thanks to its brilliant golden color and fine detailing. Seldom encountered in any condition, this piece offers abundant eye appeal and charm despite its shortcomings. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This is one of a series minted at Lima 1791-1807 for Charles IV. The type is considerably scarcer than the eight escudos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14334, Fr-41; KM-98; Cal-1454.
