This specimen was lot 3180 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2070. The catalog description[1] noted, "1792 FM 4 escudos. Mexico City mint. EF-45 (NGC). Type as above/arms, legends, assayer, and mintmark around. Medium gold with very attractive toning. Purchased from Mortimer Hammel, April 18, 1945."

This type was struck 1792-1808 and is the most available of Mexican colonial four escudos but, like the smaller two escudos, remains scarce. Assayer FM is noted for the years 1784-1801.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 13.47 grams, 30.40 mm.
