Peru 1792-L IJ 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 1250 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 2 escudos, Charles IV, 1792 IJ, NGC AU details / cleaned, ex-Sellschopp, ex-Almenara. Lustrous and well struck except for reverse rim (slightly off-center), hairlines on obverse, still desirable grade and first year of type, with bonus points for pedigree. Pedigreed to the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 349) and to the Almenara Collection." This specimen was offered again as lot 1282 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $2,160. This type was struck 1792-1808 for king Charles IV. He succeeded Charles III in 1788, but as there were delays in getting punches for the new bust out to the Latin American mints, the old hubs were used with the new king's name thru 1791.
