Mexico 1789-Mo FM escudo
This specimen was lot 31267 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $5,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold Escudo 1789 Mo-FM XF45 NGC, Mexico City mint. Attractive for the designation with partially lustrous surfaces, limited and even high-point wear, and scattered non-offensive surface abrasions. The key date of this underrated and rare type, seldom seem in presentable grades. The only example currently certified by NGC, one of the finest seen of the type by the cataloguer - only the KM plate coin apparently being unquestionably superior - and a wholly satisfying representative of this elusive date and type. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type of 1789-90 is called "transitional" as it shows the bust of Charles III, who died in January 1788, and the name of his successor, Charles IV. Punches for the portrait of the new king were not used until 1792; in the interim, this design was used.
