This specimen is one of a series struck 1773-89 in Potosi during the reign of Charles III of Spain. Several overdates are noted for the year, 1783/2 (shown here), 1783/1 and 1783/78, which are catalogued at a premium of about 33% over the normal date. Many of these pesos ended up being overstruck in Brazil for use as 960 réis.
Recorded mintage: unknown. Later dates, similarly priced, have mintages about 2-4 million.
