Aureo sale 238, lot 441

This specimen was lot 441 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 100 euro (about US$159 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1782. Potosí. PR. 8 reales. MBC+. (eight reales of 1782, Potosí mint. Choice very fine.)"

The year 1773 marked the initiation of bust coinage at Potosi, the last mint to do so, as cobs continued to be produced until 1773. The assayer PR appears for 1776-95. The SCWC notes a 1782/1 overdate but prices it lower than the regular date.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
