Chile SB120-20217r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20217 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Reales, 1782-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. NGC VF Details--Obverse Graffiti, Cleaned. An evenly worn example of this VERY RARE low-mintage date, struck sharply albeit slightly off-center, with moderate gray toning. What is called 'graffiti' by NGC appears to simply be a few light scratches to right of bust that do little to distract from the devices. Nicer than the Calbeto plate coin and the only piece thus far certified by either NGC or PCGS. From the Santa Fe Collection. Ex: Amat Collection (Ponterio 3/1991) Lot # 75. Ex: Ray Johnson Collection (Freeman Craig 11/1981) Lot # 100. Ex: Faistauer Collection (Jess Peters 4/1976) Lot # 412." Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1773-89, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles III are almost as scarce as pillar dollars from that mint.

Recorded mintage: 60,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.
