Bolivia 1782-PTS PR 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 30364 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 2 Escudos 1782-PR, VF30 NGC. This is a nicely toned and original example; the date and mintmark are crudely engraved. The SCWC lists this date with the highest price in the series. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1779-89 and is rare, tho less so than the four escudos.
