Regensburg SB819-20640r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20640 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $7,200. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Mesmerizing Near-Gem Regensburg Taler, GERMANY. Regensburg. Taler, 1706. NGC MS-64. A tremendous near-Gem of the type that certainly belongs in the conversation for finest known, with steely colored fields that absolutely gleam from roller-die striking, featuring undulations throughout that add an uniqueness to the appearance. Perfectly detailed as well, both the centers as well as the peripheral legends and outer-most dentils on both sides display pinpoint sharpness. A touch of pale tan tone outlines most the designs and helps to ensure this piece's absolute originality. Seemingly the doppelganger to a piece sold by Kunker in the last few years, that coin, offered in March 2017, bringing an impressive €7,000 hammer (approximately $9,000 all-in at the time). From the Linda Collection."

Regensburg passed to Bavaria in 1803 after centuries as an independent city-state. This one year type is expensive but less so than many other thalers of the city.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2608; KM-234.
