Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 21245

This specimen was lot 21245 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Regensburg. 1/4 Taler, ND (ca. 1711-40). Charles VI. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. A wholesome and nicely preserved example of the type exhibiting moderate even wear on the high points of the obverse while the reverse is quite bold. Lovely rich old cabinet patina radiates from the devices with argent coloration on the high points, dove gray tone in the open areas and slate patina in the protected areas all with a slight iridescent sheen." This rare type is attributed by the SCWC to 1738 as there are quarter thalers of this design dated 1737.
