Künker sale 405, part of lot 3277

The first specimen was lot 30675 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Regensburg. Free City gold 1/2 Ducat ND (1745-1765)-RB MS64 NGC. A superb survivor of the type, which one might expect to be bent or otherwise mishandled in its multi-century history, owing to its thin shape and apparent fragility. This offering, however, displays no such issues, revealing only intensely lustrous fields and needle-sharp detailing throughout, resulting in great visual charm and a noteworthy degree of conditional rarity for the issue." The second specimen was lot 3277 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €700 (about US$919 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS JOSEF II., 1765-1790. Goldmünzen aus der Zeit des Kaisers Josef II. ½ Dukatenklippe o. J (1765-1790). Münzmeister Georg Christoph Busch. Stempelschneider vermutlich Johann Nikolaus Körnlein. Mit großem Reichsapfel. GOLD. RR Kl. Henkelspur, leicht gewellt, sonst fast vorzüglich. (city of Regensburg, undated klippe half ducat, struck in the name of Joseph II, with large imperial orb. Mount mark, slightly wavy, otherwise about extremely fine.)"

This is the most common gold coin of Regensburg issued in the eighteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.75 g, 0.986 fine gold, the first specimen 1.75 g, the second specimen 1,71 g.
