Künker sale 400, lot 195

This specimen was lot 195 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €9,250 (about US$12,000 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REGENSBURG, STADT, 2 Dukaten o. J. (1745-1765), mit Titel von Franz I. Münzmeister Johann Christoph Busch. Stempelschneider Johann Leonhard Oexlein. GOLD. RR Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Heidelberger Münzhandlung, Herbert Grün 75, Heidelberg 2018, Nr. 2124. (Germany, city of Regensburg, undated double ducat, circa 1745-65, struck in the name of Francis I. Very rare, extremely fine.)"

On the occasion of the coronation of Francis I as emperor, Regensburg, which had supported his rival Charles VII, struck a long series of gold coins, from ten ducats down to 1/32 ducat (Fr-2520 to -2547). To the confusion of collectors since, none are dated; some were likely struck years later. Another double ducat exists from this period struck from single ducat dies (KM 330/Fr-2537).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6,96 g.

Catalog reference: KM 329, Beckenbauer 318 II; Fr-2535a (incorrectly described therein); Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4798.
