Mexico 1844/34-D RM real

Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72285

This specimen was lot 72285 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $512.40. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1844/34-D_ RM. Durango Mint. NGC AU-50. Variety without "o" in mintmark which makes this coin a one year type. Rare as a date but extremely rare as a variety. Only example graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. Unlike the half reales, which appear occasionally in gem condition, this denomination nearly always comes heavily circulated. Shown is an 1844/34 one real, one of a type struck at the Durango mint 1832-37, 1841-64. Assayer RM (Ramon Mascarenas) served 1832-48. No regular date is listed in the SCWC for the year. The French eagle shown here is distinctive to this mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.903 fine silver, .098 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-372.2.
