Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72010

This specimen was lot 72010 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $292.80. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/4 Real, 1844-Ga LR. Guadalajara Mint. NGC AU-55. By far the finest of only three graded. Next highest grade is Fine Details. Toned and attractive. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Nearly all the silver quarter reales struck for the Republic bear the initials of the engraver, LR, rather than those of the assayer. Exceptions are the Guadalajara issues of 1842-44, the 1842-G^O and the 1843-C^A. This date has a very low catalog value. The quarter reales of San Luis Potosi had no initials at all. The silver quarter real was supposed to displace the copper quarter reales issued by the states but was never minted in sufficient quantity. Most of the mints strove to maximize the production of eight reales for export and regarded the smaller denominations as a nuisance.
