This specimen was lot 73027 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $109. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1844-Do RM. Durango Mint. NGC VF Details--Environmental Damage, Cleaned. Scarce date. Second best of only two graded by NGC. Typical weak cap. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. The two reales was struck at the Durango mint 1826, 1832-35 and 1841-61. The 1844 shown here is the only variety listed for the year, which the SCWC prices as scarce. Assayer RM (Ramon Mascarenas) is recorded for the years 1830-48. The French eagle shown here is distinctive to this mint.
