This specimen was lot 73195 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $2,074. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1846-C CE. Culiacan Mint. NGC EF-45. Rare date and first year of issue for mint. Only example graded by NGC. Very attractive with colorful dark toning and underlying luster. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." The Culiacan mint opened in 1846 to process ore from local mines. Like many other mints, it neglected the production of small change in favor of striking pesos for export. The SCWC reports five dates for the four reales (1846, 1850, 1852, 1858 and 1860) of which only the 1860 is common. Assayer CE operated 1846-70. Culiacan would issue all the silver and gold denominations of the Republic and it and Zacatecas were the last branch mints to close, in 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown but the key date for the mint.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .392 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-375.1.
