Sincona sale 63, lot 798

This specimen was lot 798 in Sincona sale 63 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$564 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Ecu aux insignes 1701 "9", Rennes. Réformation. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the insignia of 1701, Rennes mint, reformed. Extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"

This écu aux insignes was struck 1701-03, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the écu aux 8 L, 2éme type. Droulers[2] prices this date about 25% higher than the common 1701-A.

Recorded mintage: 4,993 fn + unknown rf[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 27.00 g.
