Sincona sale 43, lot 3758

This specimen was lot 3758 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$8,950 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SPAIN, Königreich, Fernando V. und Isabel I. 1474-1504 Excelente o. J. (nach 1497). Toledo. Fast vorzüglich. Kleine prägebedingten Randfehler. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabel, 1474-1504, undated excelente, Toledo mint. About extremely fine, Minor edge nicks.)"

This type was struck after 1497 at Burgos, Cuenca, Granada, Seville, Toledo and Segovia. It is priced the same as a double excelente but is much scarcer. The excelente was nominally equal to a ducat. The Toledo product comes marked with an "I", cross or two rings.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold; this specimen 3.48 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-2883, Fr-137.
