Catalonia (1493) ducat Fr-32
This specimen was lot 853 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$2,511 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CATALOGNE ET ARAGON, Ferdinand II (1479-1516), AV ducat (principat), Barcelone. D/ B. couronné à d. Derrière, petit écu au lion (maître de la monnaie Sanchez). R/ Ecu couronné, entre B-B. Rare Beau portrait. Très Beau. (Spain, Catalonia and Aragon, Ferdinand II, 1479-1516, gold ducat or principat, Barcelona mint. Obverse: crowned bust to right, behind, a small shield with a lion (privy mark for the mintmaster); reverse: crowned arms between "B - B". Rare, nice portrait, very fine.)"
This rare type was issued by Ferdinand of Aragon just before he and his wife Isabella issued a unified gold coinage based on the excelente.
