Barcelona (1474-1504) real
The first specimen was lot 855 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €320 (about US$618 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CATALOGNE ET ARAGON, Ferdinand II (1479-1516), AR croat, Barcelone. D/ B. couronné à g., au portrait juvénile et aux cheveux fins. R/ CIVI-TAS B-RCIN-ONAT Croix longue et pattée, cantonnée de deux cercles et de deux groupes de trois globules. Patine foncée. Très Beau à Superbe. (Spain, Catalonia and Aragon, Ferdinand II, 1479-1516, silver croat, Barcelona mint. Obverse: crowned bust to left, with young portrait with fine hair; reverse: long cross cantonned with two rings and two groups of three pellets. Nice toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Cayón devotes catalog numbers 2281 thru 2293 to the various spellings of "FERDINANDVS D. G. [RE]X" on the obverse. This specimen is from a common variety. The second specimen was lot 1505 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €140 (about US$182 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CATALOGNE ET ARAGON, Ferdinand II (1479-1516), AR croat (real), Barcelone. D/ B. cour. à g., au portrait adulte. R/ Croix longue et pattée, cantonnée de deux cercles et de deux groupes de trois globules. Très Beau. (Spain, Ferdinand II, 1479-1516, king of Catalonia and Aragon, silver croat or real, Barcelona mint. Obverse: crowned adult bust left; reverse: long cross pattée cantonned with two circles and two groups of three pellets. Very Fine.)"
The second example is attributed to Cayón-2290 by the obverse legend "FERDINANDVS D. G. RX". The third specimen was lot 1234 in Aureo y Calicó sale 391 (Barcelona, June 2022), where it sold for €300 (about US$377 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,
"s/f. Carlos I. Barcelona. 1 croat. A nombre de Ferran II. Ex Áureo & Calicó 14/03/2019, nº 1163. Ex Colección Sants Padrones i Planxats. Muy rara. MBC. (kingdom of Spain, undated croat of Charles I, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Very rare, very fine.)"
The fourth specimen was lot 148 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 655 € (about US$856 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[4] noted, "1545. Carlos I. Barcelona. 1 croat. Obv.: FERDINANDUS● D●G●REX. Rev.: Roundel in 2nd and 3rd quarters. -CIUI-TASB-ARDA-NONA. In the name of Ferran II. Very rare. MBC+ [choice very fine]. Ex Egara Collection 04/26/2017, no. 622. Ex Aureo & Calico 05/23/2019, no. 31, as Juana and Carlos."
