Aureo sale 291, lot 571

This specimen was lot 571 in Aureo sale 291 (Barcelona, April 2017), where it sold for €3,300 (about US$4,235 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Ferran II (1479-1516). Mallorca. Ducat. Anv.: Busto a izquierda. FERDINANDVS R ARAGONVM. Rev.: Armas de Castilla-León y Catalunya-Sicília. MAIORIC -escudito con 3 crecientes-C TOLICVS. Letras A góticas y latinas. Atractiva. Muy rara. EBC-. (Majorca, Ferdinand II (1479-1516), ducat. Obverse: bust to left; reverse: arms of Castile and Leon and Catalonia-Sicily, three crescents on a shield below. Gothic and Latin letters. Attractive, very rare, almost extremely fine.)"

This rare ducat was equivalent to the excelente issued in the rest of Spain. Similar ducats were issued in Majorca for the emperor Charles (Fr-54). Dating coinage did not become usual in Spain until the 1590's.
