Valencia (1483)-SS ducat Fr-86
This specimen was lot 86 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 7,000 € (about US$9,144 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferran II (1479-1516). Valencia. Ducat. Obv.: Bust left between S and S. +FERDINANDSxDEI GRACIAxRE. Rev.: Arms of Valencia. +VALENCIExMAI-escutcheon with lion-ORICARVMxSE. Very nice. Original luster. Graded by NGC as MS62, no. 6054934-012. TOP POP. Rare in this condition. EBC+ [choice extremely fine]." This rare type was issued by Ferdinand of Aragon just before he and his wife Isabella issued a unified gold coinage based on the excelente. Varieties exist in the position of the "S's"; on this one, two "S's" flank the king's bust; on others, the "S's" are on the reverse or there is only one "S" on the obverse. None are common but the similar issue from Zaragoza (Cayón-2336) is very rare.
